The Alpine athletes from MPS had a very good day yesterday at the Minnesota State High School Alpine Championships.
The Washburn Boys placed 2nd in the boys team results, only one point ahead of 3rd place Minnetonka. Luke Conway (Washburn) placed 2nd overall in the boys’ Individual results. Luke posted the fastest 2nd run time on the very steep Helsinki pitch. Logan Griggs (Washburn) finished on the podium in 8th place and Zach Bion (Washburn) finished just off the podium in 11th place. Willem Robertson (Washburn) caught a tip and had to hike on the first run but came back to post the 31st fastest time on the second run. Augie Bent (Washburn) had a very good first run that put him in 59th place but on the second run he had some bad luck when his ski popped off unexpectedly. Alpine counts the results of a team’s four fastest racers, so the race came down to Alexander Heath, our sixth skier. Alexander, in only his third year of racing, handled the pressure and his nerves extraordinarily well. Knowing he had to stand for his team to stay on the podium, he backed off the accelerator to put two clean runs to together to finish in 60th place overall. His solid finish earned the team enough points to finish in second place. For the girls, Ahnika Berg (Washburn) skied very well to finish in 19th place
Luke, Logan Zach and Ahnika all earned All State Honors for their performances. Way to go Millers.
